This guide summarises experience from more than 30 years of ESDI workshop practice. Which symptom points to which cause depends on the machine model, the year of manufacture and the spindle's history — we make the exact diagnosis by phone or in the workshop, not by remote diagnosis from an article.

Spindle chatters or rattles. Chatter marks on the workpiece and an audible rattle from the main spindle are among the most common spindle symptoms on Gildemeister CNC lathes. In most cases the bearing itself is not yet finished: after roughly 8,000 to 15,000 operating hours the factory preload of the spindle bearings relaxes, the spindle develops radial play — and that shows up as chatter under load. The second common cause is a single damaged rolling element with pitting or a crack: it produces a periodic click that scales with spindle speed. Third, a worn encoder cable or a drifting servo amplifier can cause speed fluctuations that sound like mechanical chatter even though the mechanics are sound — and the tool or the clamping device can be the cause as well, not just the spindle. → Fault page “spindle chatter” on Gildemeister · Causes & first checks in detail

Spindle runs hot. A spindle that gets unusually hot in operation does not automatically mean bearing damage. From workshop practice, the first check is usually the simpler case: cooling fan speed and lubrication. Only when both are in order does a bearing defect move into focus. → Spindle spare parts & symptom classification

Error code “Spindel Timeout” (spindle timeout). When the control reports a spindle timeout, it is waiting for a signal — target speed reached, or zero speed — and does not receive it within the expected time window. All Gildemeister CNC lathes with a frequency-controlled spindle drive are affected. The component class behind it: encoder, encoder cable, drive amplifier or the spindle motor itself. Run-out deviation. Run-out deviation and a grinding noise are symptoms where we listen first and measure second, not the other way round. Whether a repair with a concentricity check is enough or more is needed only becomes clear after visual inspection and measurement of the spindle — installed or removed. What you can check yourself before calling. Five details help us narrow down the cause on the phone: at which spindle speed the noise occurs and whether it scales linearly with speed; whether it only appears under load or in idle as well; the approximate operating hours of the spindle and the date of the last maintenance — 8,000 operating hours is the rule of thumb for the service life of the original preload on a CTX main spindle; whether it is a low hum (bearing preload), a periodic click (a single rolling element) or a high-frequency whine (encoder or control loop); and whether a short audio recording is possible. Do not remove the spindle for this — a vibration measurement with the spindle installed often says more than a stripped spindle and saves unnecessary removal work if the cause lies in the drive control rather than in the mechanics.

Before every repair: back up parameters and NC programs, whatever the symptom. Replace components only after a diagnosis, never on suspicion — replacing a spindle bearing or encoder without a prior diagnosis quickly costs four figures, and often the cause is not the spindle at all but the tool, the clamping device or a cable.

Which spare parts are usually behind it. The motor parts catalogue lists 806 motor part numbers, 54 of them with a direct spindle relation: stator sets for main and sub spindle drives, motor spindle windings and complete spindle motors for the CTX, TWIN, GMX and MF series. Repair or exchange spindle? Whether a repair pays off or an exchange spindle is the better choice depends on spindle type, machine value and remaining service life. A repaired CTX main spindle with new bearings, seals and balancing often reaches the original accuracy — an exchange spindle is available faster, but costs more. We distinguish two service levels: spindle service — inspection, measurement and minor overhaul work while the spindle still runs but shows anomalies — and spindle repair with bearing, seal and encoder replacement plus balancing when the spindle has failed or no longer runs usably. A spindle repair typically takes 8 to 15 business days from arrival at the workshop, depending on bearing availability. What is needed in each case only becomes clear after visual inspection and measurement — we discuss scope and cost with you in person beforehand, on request.

Test bench with function test report. The workshop process always follows the same pattern: acceptance of the spindle by shipment or on-site removal, visual inspection and measurement, disassembly with component documentation, bearing and seal replacement, reassembly with the original preload — and finally a test run on the test bench with a function test report before the spindle goes back.
