With Gildemeister controls, the fault is rarely where the error code points. EPL won't boot? Sounds like software — usually it's memory hardware. Axis error? Sounds like the axis — often it's the encoder cable connection. We listen first, then test it on the bench.

Send the control unit / board to ESDI in Herford. Back up all data before shipping, if possible.

Diagnosis
Test bench check under load. Fault pattern analysis, component identification, cost estimate.

Component replacement, soldering work, thermal imaging, calibration. Another load test.

What We Often See in
Control Repairs.
// 01 · EPL from the 1990s
Capacitors at end of life.
Heidenhain EPL controls from the 1990s often have electrolytic capacitors that have reached end of life. Symptoms: intermittent dropouts, boot errors, startup problems. Repair is almost always worthwhile.
// 02 · NC Backup Battery
Parameters lost after a power cut.
A weak NC backup battery is the classic cause. Tip: back up all parameters and NC programs before any control repair — the control can lose them.
// 03 · Simodrive IGBT
Torque loss.
With Simodrive 611 A/D, a faulty IGBT is the most common cause of "torque loss" errors. We run a load test on our own IGBT bench before every repair decision.

Intermittent axis errors.
"Axis error" on the display rarely means "axis broken." Often it's the encoder cable or a connector contact. We test with an encoder simulator before replacing any components.

What does an EPL control repair cost?
On request. We narrow it down by phone whether the repair is worthwhile — and give you a price range and timeframe upfront. There are no flat-rate prices, because control faults vary too much.
Heidenhain EPL1 won't boot — what should I check?
Most common causes: a weak backup battery, a faulty main board memory chip, or a damaged data bus. Back up parameters and NC programs before any repair. More in our workshop guide on EPL1 failures.
Does ESDI also repair discontinued control models?
Yes. EPL controls from the 1990s and early 2000s are our specialty — many OEM manufacturers no longer service them. We also repair Eltropilot units.
How long does a control repair take?
Diagnosis usually within 1-2 business days of arrival. Repair takes 3-10 business days depending on the fault and spare parts availability. Express options on request.
