// HEIDENHAIN · ERROR CODE K7302

Error K7302 on CTX.
What it means in practice.

// SHORT ANSWER

K7302 "Internal software error" on a Gildemeister CTX 400 is, despite its name, almost never a software bug but a hardware clue: usually defective memory on the main board, a weak NC backup battery or a data bus fault. Back up parameters and NC programs before any repair.

// THE 3 MOST COMMON CAUSES

What is usually behind it.

// 01

Weak NC backup battery

K7302 often appears when the NC backup battery is at its voltage limit and occasionally delivers wrong data — or no data at all — from the memory. Symptom: the code appears intermittently, often after a cold start, sometimes together with data loss. First measure: check the backup battery and replace it.

// 02

Defective RAM or EPROM on the CPU board

When the control detects read/write errors while booting, it reports K7302. Memory chips age — the electrolytic capacitors on the CPU board that supply them become weak over time. The diagnosis is done on the test bench with a memory test routine.

// 03

Dry solder joint or connection problem on the system bus

Intermittent behaviour — the code appears, the machine runs again afterwards — almost always points to a dry solder joint or an oxidised connector. That is workshop routine: open the control, clean the connectors, re-solder the critical joints.

// FIRST CHECKS

What you can
check yourself.

Before you remove or ship anything — these five steps are safe and give us the most important clues on the phone.

  1. 01 ·Note whether K7302 appears intermittently or at every start. Intermittent behaviour = very probably the backup battery or a dry solder joint. Permanent = probably a RAM or EPROM defect.
  2. 02 ·Back up parameters, machine data and NC programs immediately via the serial interface. If the memory is defective, they can be lost for good.
  3. 03 ·Check the age of the backup battery (sticker on the control, workshop log). If the battery is older than 5 years — replace it before any further repair.
  4. 04 ·Note whether the control log shows other faults shortly before K7302 — e.g. voltage faults, data CRC warnings, axis encoder problems. The history often shows the real path.
  5. 05 ·Before you force the control into a reset or reinstall it: call us. We know the K7302 fault class from workshop experience and can often save you the data loss.

// FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What we are often
asked about this.

// 01

Is K7302 always a repair case?

No. If it appears intermittently and the backup battery is weak, replacing the battery plus a thorough cleaning of the connectors is often enough. Only when the code appears at every start is a workshop repair necessary.

// 02

Which CTX models typically show this fault?

We see K7302 above all on CTX 400, CTX 410, CTX 500 and CTX 510 with EPL/EP-based controls — mainly on machines built in the late 1990s and the early 2000s.

// 03

Can data be lost during a K7302 repair?

If the backup battery is very weak and RAM chips are defective at the same time: yes, that is possible. This is why the first measure is always a data backup — before anything else happens.

// 04

Can the code also be triggered by external equipment?

Yes, rarely. Defective encoders or disturbed sensor lines can create data glitches on the system bus that trigger K7302. If the fault only appears while the machine is running — not while booting — that points to an external cause.

// 05

What does a K7302 diagnosis and repair cost?

At ESDI on request. The diagnosis is done on the test bench, and only afterwards can the effort be stated exactly. We discuss the scope with you beforehand, in person.

// 06

Do you also repair when the machine is already down?

Yes. In urgent cases we clarify the procedure by phone — sometimes narrowing the fault down by phone shortens the downtime, and often express shipping of the control is the fastest route.
