Axis won't move, spindle failed, an older MD without EPL — with MD-series symptoms, diagnosis is a matter of listening, not of ordering parts. 5–10 minutes on the phone usually prevent the wrong replacement.

What we often see on MD machines
after 30 years.
MD mechanics last. Controls give up first.
On MD machines the bed, the headstock and the axis guideways are usually still in good shape. What fails first: old control boards from the 1980s, and operator panels with a worn membrane keypad.
Discontinued parts are doable.
MD components are no longer available from the manufacturer. We fall back on our own archive and on long-standing second-source suppliers. Anything we can't find, we have remanufactured to the original drawing.
We can overhaul spindles.
An MD main spindle with a damaged bearing set is usually not a write-off. We strip it down, measure it, replace bearings and seals — and test it under load before it goes back.
We discuss cost-effectiveness up front.
Some MD machines are no longer worth repairing. In that case we say so honestly. Advice is free, even when the answer is: better to buy a replacement machine.
