// Symptom, not part number?
“Chatter marks on the workpiece” isn't a part number — it's a clue.
Concentricity deviation, grinding noise, an overheating spindle, a tool dropping out mid-cut — with spindle symptoms, diagnosis is a matter of listening first, and measuring second. We listen before we open anything up.

// SCOPE OF SERVICE
SPINDLE SERVICE / SPINDLE REPAIR
SPINDLE SERVICE
Inspection, measurement, minor overhaul work — for when the spindle still runs but shows signs of trouble.
// on request
SPINDLE REPAIR
Full repair with bearing, seal and encoder replacement plus balancing — for when the spindle fails or is no longer usable.
// on request
We determine exactly what work is needed after a visual inspection and measurement. Scope and cost are always discussed with you in person beforehand — no off-the-shelf flat-rate packages.
// WORKSHOP PROCESS
HOW A SPINDLE REPAIR WORKS HERE
Four steps, one fixed process — from intake to test run. Before it goes back out, every spindle runs on the test bench with a function test report, so concentricity, bearing play and encoder signal are documented, not just claimed.
01 / 04
INTAKE
Ship the spindle in, or have our team remove it on site — also available directly in NRW and OWL.
02 / 04
DISASSEMBLY
Disassembly, cleaning, measurement of every component with full component documentation.
03 / 04
OVERHAUL
Bearing replacement, seal replacement, encoder service if needed, reassembly to original preload.
04 / 04
REASSEMBLY & TEST
Test run on the test bench with function test report, final inspection and return shipment — per the agreed scope.
// DECISION GUIDE
REPAIR OR EXCHANGE SPINDLE?
REPAIR
A repaired main spindle with new bearings, seals and balancing often reaches original accuracy again. Typical turnaround: 8 to 15 business days from workshop intake, depending on bearing availability.
EXCHANGE SPINDLE
Available faster, but more expensive than repairing the existing spindle. Worth weighing up when downtime or the remaining service life of the other spindle components is tight.
What's worthwhile depends on spindle type, machine value and remaining service life — we discuss that with you in person beforehand, after a visual inspection and measurement. For a deeper look at symptoms and causes, see our Spindle Guide.
// SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS
TYPICAL SYMPTOMS AND WHAT'S BEHIND THEM
These are the four symptoms we see most often in the workshop. Below is the rough component class for each — the exact diagnosis is made by phone or after a visual inspection.
SPINDLE CHATTERS / CHATTER MARKS
Can come from the tool, the workholding, or the spindle itself — component class: bearing preload, tool holder, workholding, vibration from the drive.
More on this fault patternERROR CODE “SPINDLE TIMEOUT”
The control expects a spindle signal and doesn't receive it within the expected time window. Component class: encoder, encoder cable, drive amplifier, spindle motor.
More on this error codeCHATTER — THE 3 CAUSES
Bearing preload lost after 8,000 to 15,000 operating hours, a single damaged rolling element, or an encoder/control-loop issue rather than mechanics.
Causes in detailSPINDLE OVERHEATING
Doesn't have to be bearing damage: the first checks are cooling fan speed and lubrication — only after that does a bearing defect move into focus.

// FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
QUESTIONS FROM THE WORKSHOP FLOOR
How do I know if the spindle is really the problem?
Chatter marks on the workpiece or unusual noises can come from the tool, the workholding, or the spindle itself. That's why we listen first on the phone, before narrowing down the component class.
What does the repair process in the workshop actually look like?
Intake of the spindle by shipping or on-site removal, visual inspection and measurement, disassembly with component documentation, bearing and seal replacement, reassembly to original preload, and finally a test run on the test bench with a function test report, before the spindle goes back to you.
Is a repair worthwhile, or does an exchange spindle make more sense?
That depends on spindle type, machine value and remaining service life. A repaired main spindle with new bearings, seals and balancing often reaches original accuracy again — an exchange spindle is available faster, but more expensive.
How long does a spindle repair take?
Typically 8 to 15 business days from workshop intake, depending on bearing availability. Spindles with special bearing arrangements or a rare configuration take longer — we clarify that before the repair starts.
Which spindle spare parts does ESDI carry in stock itself?
The motor parts catalogue lists 806 motor part numbers, 54 of which relate directly to spindles — stator sets, motor spindle windings and complete spindle motors for CTX, TWIN, GMX and MF series.
