CTX400 — THE COMPONENTS THAT WEAR OUT FIRST IN PRACTICE

The following list is based on experience gathered in the ESDI workshop — across numerous CTX400 repairs and maintenance jobs. Actual service lives depend heavily on operating conditions, shift model, material, maintenance and care. This overview does not replace the manufacturer's official maintenance recommendation and is intended as an aid to setting priorities.

1. Main spindle bearings. On heavily used machines, run-out deviations become measurable over time. Typical symptoms: chatter marks on the workpiece, elevated spindle temperature, a quiet grinding or humming noise. Prevention means measuring run-out regularly — and not waiting until the workpieces turn into scrap.

2. Tool turret. On the turrets in use, play develops in the internal drive over the years. Symptoms: inaccurate tool positioning, a click or grinding noise during the change, deteriorating repeat accuracy. Depending on the findings, a gearbox overhaul or a replacement will do the job.

3. Coolant pumps. The pumps run practically non-stop — the shaft seal and the bearings are classic wear parts. Symptoms: whistling noise, dropping pressure, a leak underneath the machine. Preventive replacement pays off here, before coolant runs into the inside of the machine.

4. Telescopic covers of the linear guides. Chips and workpiece fragments tear the covers over time. Once coolant and chips get underneath, expensive consequential damage to the linear guides follows — replacing them at the first visible cracks almost always pays off.

5. Electrolytic capacitors in the power electronics. Electrolytic capacitors age even without load. On older machines, preventive replacement is often cheaper than a complete failure of the drive assembly. We offer this as a service — you send in the board, we fit the capacitors.

6. Mechanical holding brakes of the axes. Frequent emergency stops wear out the brakes. A simple test: switch off power to the axis — it must hold safely. If it slips, the brake has to be replaced. Safety-relevant.

Our recommendation: a simple logbook per component (operating hours, last inspection, anomalies) pays for itself within a few months. Preventive replacement costs hours, an unplanned failure costs days. Talk to us for an individual maintenance plan.
